Release Notes

What's New for 7.2.0

DNN 7.2.0 includes a number of new features and enhancements that will benefit users and developers alike along with a large number of bug fixes. Enhancements can be broadly broken down into two categories: 1) Application Features 2) Developer Features

Application Features

Responsive Design Skin

The Gravity skin was redesigned to use the Bootstrap framework which provides for a fully responsive design out of the box.

SQL Module

The SQL module has undergone a complete overhaul in 7.2.0 including a new editor and updated query results pane.

Module Creator

The DNN Module Creator has been incorporated directly into DNN making it easier than ever to get started writing your new DNN extension.

User Search

The DNN Search has been extended in 7.2.0 to include the ability to search users and user profiles (this feature is easily disabled for those who would prefer not to use it).

Developer Features

JavaScript Library Management

DNN 7.2.0 allows you to install JavaScript libraries as first party extensions. Once installed your module or skin can request that JavaScript library and the platform will automatically add the library into the page. The API mirrors the one used for jQuery and JQuery UI making it very easy to use.

Code Editor

The new CodeMirror code editor component has been added to DNN to provide a full syntax highlighting code editor when needed. Module developers can incorporate this feature with just a few lines of JavaScript.

NOTE: The name of the installation packages have changed to reflect our new branding which was announced this summer.

Reviews for this release

I give it 5 stars as I could not find anything wrong after my upgrade. Upgraded from 07.01.00 (2676) to 07.02.00 (607) with the I spend about 45 minutes afterwards looking at critical components, and all of them still functional. Here are the things I like: This time included, so no more of those false js warnings in Chrome. CodeEditor that is now part of core, great! Few toast (message), file upload changes, module creator, SQL Editor etc. Though I do not use the gravity skin, I looked at the new bootstrap and responsive changes, and its a nice step, in the right direction. For newbie skin developers, at least you do not have to do all the plumbing for a bootstrap skin from scratch. Some special note. I do run a large production site with "against the recommendation" and are using memory persistence on pages. I usually manually tweak the .cs files for those pages which I find do not like this. I still have to go through my check-list and check these page. I use all EasyDNNSolutions modules as well as NB_Store, and they still behave as before the upgrade. Thanks Shaun & Team!

When attempting to upgrade portal, which already has ModuleCreator module, alerts: 5% ERROR occured - Error: Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.ModuleDefinitions' with unique index 'IX_ModuleDefinitions'. The duplicate key value is (Module Creator). The statement has been terminated. Fixed with deleting row from the table. Another portal: 50% ERROR occured - Installing Module - A newer version of this package is already installed - 2.0.3. UPD. Second issue was based on flooding <PortalFolder>\Install\Modules with different module versions from previous updates. I cleared out my <PortalFolder>\Install folder and update went succesfully.

Can you try uninstalling ModuleCreator before doing the upgrade? We will address this bug in the 7.2.1 release due out in January.

There were a few glitches.. but I'll give it 5 starts because of the great support received from the dnn team on the forum to help me fix them. 1. Module Creator error (during upgrade) - fixed by deleting ModuleCreator row from the Module Definitions database table (you should uninstall module first, or you could also restore and uninstall but deleting row is ok too) *It would be nice if the dnn install process could check for duplicate modules and skip them if already installed* 2. Iconbar error (after upgrade) - I was using the old iconbar because the ribbonbar was giving me troubles.. it looks like the iconbar is no longer supported in dnn 7.2 - Fixed it by changing Control Panel value from IconBar.aspx to ControlBar.aspx in the HostSettings database table. *It would be nice if dnn could warn us of features becoming obsolete* 3. Host settings error (after upgrade) - couldn't access host settings at all - caused by dnn 7.2 not being able to read the encrypted smtp password - Fixed by clearing the 'smtp password' value field in the HostSettings database table than I could access host settings and retype the same pass. *I'm sure this glitch will be fixed for the next release*

Upgrade was very smooth without any issues. However the memory usage after the upgrade went up high, aboiut 200 MB increase in memory usage whic is very significant for us.

Congrats on the update. I do like the changes on the SQL module! I have found an issue with the symbol files though. Not sure where to post, so I'll post it here: The version in the symbol files manifest still shows 7.1.2 although the download file name says 7.2.0.

Upgraded from 6.2 and I'm getting javascript errors with all the dnn javascript code when I log in as admin or host. I've been using DNN since 4.5 and I keep hoping that it will be bug free and faster, but it's not happening. Time to move on.
by timparis on Jan 4, 2014 at 1:55 AM
OK, I guess. If you're upgrading from DNN 6, you'll need at least Microsoft Server 2008. If you are currently on Server 2003 or older, you will need to migrate your Website. If you use DNN Pro, you will need to re-activate your license, else DNN will deface your Website. Hope you know how to edit your 'hosts' file to access the version that is longer pointed to by DNS. File permissions didn't make the transition, so our PHP scripts aborted. Fun. Oh, your scheduled backup was forgotten, Better re-schedule that. "Admin -> Settings" and "Host -> Settings" fail. Gotcha! Worst of all, the new CSS defaults are really dumb. You'll have to meticulously scrutinize every page for egregious padding and line spacing, and compensate in your skin.css, Get ready to become real intimate with Firebug. (This is why I no longer depend on DNN for eCommerce).

Problem in other languages (particularly Russian) in displaying localized strings for a Password control (CssClass = "password-strength"). Revealed that in the methods of the class DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.Json must be Encoding.UTF8 (instead Encoding.Default and Encoding.Unicode).

The core reports module is broken with the release - links to xsl files don't work. If you have only one or two instances of the report module you can link to an external file as a work around. The issue not only breaks the module but the entire page. I use the reports module on nearly every page so my site was completely broken. First upgrade I have had to revert to a previous version via backup.
by BinbinB on Dec 27, 2013 at 5:05 PM
The reports module is not a core module and hasn't been for more than 6 years. As such it is simply a 3rd party module (the same as any you would buy or download), and not something we can fix or be responsible for. I notice it has not had an updated release since 2011, so I am not surprised that elements of it might have stopped working - I'd recommend you contact the team at or see if someone will fork it to resolve your issue.

that typically indicates a corrupted zip file. Can you re-download the file to a different location (often a good idea to give it a different name) and try again.

Upgraded several instances from 7.0.6 to 7.2.0 and it went smooth as silk. Nice job!

No problems upgrading from 6.2 to 7.2. Upgrade was finished in less than a minute.

@CodePlexUsermax - I've logged the module creator bug to but am unsure of the ddrmenu bug as we ship with 02.00.03 which is the latest release from - Do you have a later release than that installed - if so please log it to so we can ensure we ship with it in 7.2.1?
by cathalconnolly on Dec 11, 2013 at 9:18 PM
I like DNN, but now this is the first time, the upgrade-process failed from 7.01.02: Same us CodePlexUsermax: 5% duplicate key IX_ModuleDefinitions (Module Creator).... Solved: Restored old version, drop module "ModuleCreator", installed upgrade Please check duplicated entries in next versions.

Setup or upgrade blank site - nothing work!

I'd recommend creating a forum post at as it's difficult to communicate via the codeplex review section. With that type of early exception it often points to missed prerequisites so please check you're using .net 4.0 or above), IIS 7 or above and SQL 2008 or above

DNN Install/Upgrade 7.0.6 to 7.2.0 processed with no errors took about 7 minutes. My machine is: Server 2012 - Dual 6 core xeon processors and 72 gigs of ram. SQL Server Express 2012 IIS 8 ** Problem is: Can Not log into any portal. After entering the username and password, the sign in box closes and in the content_pane I get "A critical error has occurred. An unexpected error has occurred ". Any help at all would be appreciated.

I'd recommend creating a forum post at as it's difficult to communicate via the codeplex review section. I'd also recommend you set log4net to All to capture the exception

Hello, 2 stars because when trying to upgrade, the wizzard says : "50% ERROR occured - {0} : attempted to divide by 0" I have no idea and no information about this error ( {0} is not instancied). Then my Website is down ...

You should be able to look in your log files and see what errors might have been reported? The detailed log files are available at /portals/_default/logs. You should also checkout the forums at for further assistance.

Ver. 7.2 aborts at 50% of the update at DDRMenu install. I had great hopes that all would good well after poor reviews of the 7.1 series. I was updating from 7.0.6. Anyone else seeing this.

I upgrade without problem. I really like the new SQL module. Thank you again.

It would be good if the new GIT repository, that is used internally, could be replicated to Codeplex, allowing the community to contribute code changes.
by JamieClayton on Dec 4, 2013 at 11:56 PM
It is something that is on the backlog. Still have some processes to work out. But you can always contribute directly on GitHub. The repository is public The master branch represents the latest release and the Development branch is for the latest version under development.

Upgraded pre-production site for testing was 7.1.2 After 7.2.0 upgrade high volume of search exceptions. Previously could view web site via mobile device as desktop view, now DNN does not honour anything other than responsive. NB_Store action menu broken returns 404 error. Not sure that this is really a stable release as stated. Thanks Joe - yes found out more about responsive skin from today'w web cast. RE NB_Store problem, the advanced setting for DNNFriendly reformats the url parameter when the existing EditURL code is used which breaks, humanfriendly works ok. There are workarounds for using NB_Store with DNN 7.x and DNNFreindlyURL Mode Advanced:
by Technica on Dec 7, 2013 at 12:22 AM
Responsive design is only baked into the default skin. You are still free to use any other available skin if that better suits your particular use case. We'll take a look at the NB_Store issue.
