The best free open source CMS for the .NET platform. If your going to be doing module development don't waste time with the starter kits, just reference the dotnetnuke.dll and go from there, writing modules for dotnetnuke is no harder than any other .NET application provided you are not the kind of dev that can only drag and drop controls on to the page. You can write modules in C# or VB.NET

It is great to use DNN at first glance, but if you want to develop real application under DNN, please make sure you do enough research before you start.

I have been using this version of DNN on my site ( for about a month now and have experienced no problems. Seems to be a good, stable version. I used the the upgrade installation. This may not seem obvious to some, but one thing I have learned about these upgrades is to always back up your site immediately before attempting the installation. If you don't you may regret it.

Just a comment on the Visual Studio Starter kit - it could do with some serious upgrading. The DNN manifest file doesn't conform to the 5.x "schema" (although I s'pose DNN5 is probably backward compatible) and it still uses things like ArrayLists in the code.

You need to jump through all the hoops on in order to get to download version.

Issues with upgrade of 5.0.1 to 5.1.4, it's not that i dislike dnn it's just my production server just went offline and it's really making me scrap everything and start over, it's good that this one supports iis7 which helped in lauching one of the dnn on production with win 2008 and iis7 but my other iis 6 and 2003 went offline and it's not working as it should have worked.

5.1.4 Version Upgrade failed to upgrade from 5.1.2 with useless web.config error message. Copied connection string/machine key/objectQualifier to only config file-release.config. Used 5.1.4 New Installation, which worked fine as an upgrade. Copied conn/key/qual to web.config.

I've been using DotNetNuke since March 2009 and had good experience. From installation to understanding every functionality is really easy; the only thing which is lacking here IMO is ArticleManagement module. Rest of all modules are charm, I strongly recommended using this pack of Community edition. Thanks DNN team :) Hemantgiri S. Goswami founder and Leader

I have just got this 5.1.4 release's upgrade installed smoothly over my DNN 5.1.1 web site setup. Thank you.

This is one of the most fragile cms's I've ever had the displeasure of running. I know it's popular and there are a ton of modules for it. When it works, it's okay. But it's when it doesn't work when the heartache begins. If you like to play 'catch the falling knife' games, then go for it. Logging? Slim to none. Debugging Slim to none.

In 2 of 3 DNN server updates I installed I got a 'Installing Package File HTML_Community_05.01.04_Install' error.

Flawless and fast upgrade to 5.1.4. and the packages include also latest versions of Form and List 5.0.3 and Forum 4.5.3 inside; definitely worth a try.
