Release Notes

NOTE: As with any release, we recommend you perform a complete file and database backup before performing any upgrade on a production website and that you first conduct a trial upgrade on a staging version of the site. Following these guidelines will ensure that you are able to recover should any unforeseen problems arise during the upgrade process.

Major Highlights

  • Added feature to detect if a site is not running the suggested customErrors configuration to mitigate the ASP.Net POET Vulnerability.
  • Updated the default web.config to use the recommended customerrors settings to mitigate the ASP.Net POET Vulnerability.
  • Fixed Sitemap Provider so it only returns one page when multiple languages are enabled and Content Localization is not enabled.
  • Fixed Telrik File Manager to make files stored using database folders visible to the user.
  • Fixed issue where module developers using custom aspx pages that inherit from basepage and use codeblocks get an exception
  • Fixed issue where the locale was not properly reflecting the querystring and the users browser or portal settings.
  • Fixed issue where users were not granted proper permissions for the Templates folder on install.
  • Fixed issue where missing objectqualifier would cause upgrade script to fail.
  • Updated the url parser to take port 443 and ssl into consideration. its no longer necessary to turn off human friendly or use-port number in web.config
  • Fixed behavior of Language detection when Content Localization is not enabled.
  • Updated update tab logic to take host tabs into consideration.
  • Fixed install template to ensure content localization is defaulted to off for new installs
  • Updated the warnning dialog confirmation box to show the user name and the role that the user is being removed from.
  • Fixed issue where tab hierarchy was not displayed properly when the tab level was changed in the tab hierarchy.
  • Fixed issue where translators were not given the proper edit permissions when content localization was enabled.

Security Fixes

  • Added enhancements to patch ASP.Net POET Vulnerability

Reviews for this release

upgraded from 5.5.0 w/o any problems, good job!

Upgrading using this version is the first and only experience I've ever had with dnn that didn't make me want to crush my testicles b/t a train wheel and the track. I wish the instructions were easier to find, but once found this actually worked. dnn has NEVER worked. This was brilliant. Thank you.

I got the error for auto installation. 00:00:30.859 - Installing Package File DNNMembershipProvider_05.01.03_Install: Error! Looking everything is great. Thanks Team

I upgraded from 5.5.0 to 5.5.1 with the install package (making the necessary changings in the web.config file) and the upgrade didn't work the first time (Providers DLL not loaded) I had to copy the Providers dlls from /bin/Providers to /bin folder to make the upgrade work.

...much better than the last one but still needs a lot of work, i´ve seen around the community that many are moving from DNN...:( should be an alarm for the DNN Team! I recomend to have a look at the web.config and check the handlers for compatibility differences. ...JGSDNNFan, Telerik.web.ui.dll is there, see the differences between upgrade pack and fresh install...

The Good: Restoring the Human Friendly URL's and fixing the SiteMap issues for multiple languages was welcomed for us International clients. Also, the DNN Corp receives kudo points for the rapid response to the ASP. Net security vulnerability issue disclosed 2010-09-17. The Bad: The Content Localization still tests poorly in all aspects. Telerik.web.ui.dll still missing in upgrade pkgs.

5.5.0 to 5.5.1 nice and smooth. Thanks!

Upgraded 2 sites without any issues at all. @Boe this is a change in packaging explained in a blog by Joe Brinkman here; http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2711/Where-did-Telerik-go.aspx @m2land there is a significant change with the Web Platform installer that was implemented by Microsoft not DotNetNuke because of confusion regarding setup by basic users.
by KenGrierson on Sep 26, 2010 at 11:49 PM
Why the Web Paltform Installer for 5.5.1 does not work now? It can not set database db and user now. ACL setting is aslo not correctly setted.
by m2land on Sep 26, 2010 at 2:17 PM
Upgrade went well, but the telerik.web.ui.dll is still missing in the upgrade version :/ you need to copy telerik.web.ui.dll from Library/components/telerik/bin of the source version to /website/bin

Tested upgrade on a 05.04.02 (66) site. Upgrade log reported success but the site will not open - just gets stuck opening the default.aspx page (waiting/loading report). Update: a number of other DNN sites on this dedicated server also stalled (some did not). IIS crashed when restarted. Server reboot fixed all issues. Not sure if it was the upgrade - server very stable till this upgrade

by DudeWalker on Sep 22, 2010 at 5:31 PM
Outstanding work to get a proactive check and fix in for DotNetNuke sites to protect against the POET/Oracle Padding attack. There's an impressive number of stabilization updates as well.
